Dear Friends
We are all feeling the disappointment of not prevailing on Election Night. To have worked as hard as you all did, to have given so much of your time, money, energy and passion over the last five months, or more, and come up short, is a great let down. I want to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I am profoundly grateful. Your willingness to respond so enthusiastically to our campaign is nothing short of inspirational. We knew going into this that it would be a challenging race. We did not win the nomination of the Democratic Party for the State Assembly on Tuesday, but we can be proud that we stayed true to a positive, honest message of bold progressive leadership. We raised awareness of the need for dramatic health care reform in California and many other issues.
I am proud of the incredible support from elected officials, unions, Democratic clubs and many other organizations and community leaders. I am humbled by the work of so many of you who volunteered your time to canvass neighborhoods and make phone calls to voters. I will never forget your friendship and support.
When I called my opponent to congratulate him, I stressed the importance of all of us working together now to ensure the success of the Democratic primary winners and our party in November. After a bit of rest and recuperation it will be crucial for us to focus on helping Phil Angelides and Debra Bowen regain the offices of Governor and Secretary of State. We will want to rally around Jerry Brown, Bill Lockyer and John Chiang, to continue strong Democratic leadership in the offices of Attorney General, Treasurer and Controller. And we will want to see that John Garamendi keeps the office of Lieutenant Governor filled by a good Democrat.
Again, with gratitude and humility, I thank you for your generous help. I look forward to fighting by your side for the good of California in the future.
Sincerely,
