Councilmember Abbe Land
Councilmember Abbe Land has proudly been a resident of West Hollywood since 1979. She has felt privileged to play an instrumental role in West Hollywood, since she was part of the successful campaign to make West Hollywood an independent city in 1984 to today, where she serves as a thoughtful, engaged and visionary member of the City Council.
In 1985, she was appointed to the City's first Planning Commission. When a council seat was vacated mid-term in 1986, she was elected to the City Council for her first term. She served with distinction as a Councilmember and Mayor until 1997, when she did not seek another term. In 2003, Land returned to public service when she was once again elected to the City Council, and was re-elected in 2007. She has served four previous terms as Mayor of West Hollywood (1989-90, 1994-95, 2005-2006, 2009-2010).
For over two decades, Land has influenced public policy at the local, county, state and federal level on a variety of issues ranging from affordable housing and the environment to reproductive health care to LGBT equality.
In addition to her public service, Councilmember Land serves as the co-chief executive officer of The Saban Free Clinic -- formerly known as The Los Angeles Free Clinic -- the oldest continuously operating free clinic in the nation. The Saban Free Clinic provides free medical and dental care, counseling, HIV testing, health education, prenatal care and wellness programs for thousands of uninsured men, women and children each year. A recognized leader in healthcare management, Land is one of the state's leading advocates for universal health coverage and access to culturally competent care for all.
In addition she serves on the advisory board of Women Against Gun Violence and on the board of directors of the California Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County. She is an appointed member of the L.A. County Department of Health Services' Women's Health Policy Council. She also serves on the board of the AIDS Community Action Foundation and of the Planned Parenthood-LA Advocacy Project.
Councilmember Land has previously served on the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities & the California League of Cities, the Southern California Association of Governments, California Women Lead and she is a former President of Women in Municipal Government, now known as California Women Lead.
She lives in West Hollywood with her husband, artist Martin Gantman.
