Leading on the Environment
One of the region’s most respected environmental leaders, Abbe Land has shown a visionary commitment and creative approach to solving some of the most challenging environmental issues. She is the author of the City of West Hollywood’s Green Building ordinance, the first of its kind in the nation.
She has taken the lead in guiding the City's policies on the environment and sustainability. She initiated the City’s Environmental Task Force; their recommendations have led to the development of a cutting edge Climate Action that will be adopted as part of the City’s General Plan. She had initiated several of the City's landmark environmental policies to cut our carbon emissions and plays a leadership role in creating local solutions to global warming, and led the effort to ensure that the new West Hollywood Library will be a certified LEED Silver building.
Her concern for the environment led to the development of the drought tolerant demonstration gardens on two central City corners (Crescent Heights and Santa Monica Boulevards). Additionally, Land co-sponsored a Heritage Tree Preservation Program to protect some old growth trees and increase the City's urban canopy. She also co-sponsored a Mixed-Use Task Force to examine mixed-use development for a more pedestrian-friendly, sustainable urban environment, and spearheaded the creation of the City's Environmental Task Force.
Land supported the City efforts that purchased hybrid vehicles for the City’s fleet autos, and required trash collection vehicles contracted with the City to utilize alternative fuel vehicles. She authored the West Hollywood ban on polystyrene (Styrofoam) products and initiated the City’s cutting-edge curbside recycling program to include small unit buildings, and the City’s award-winning restaurant recycling program that sorts all food waste and recyclables from West Hollywood restaurants. Land also spearheaded the effort to reinvigorate the City’s community garden program.
In addition, Land serves as one of the City of West Hollywood's representatives on the Westside Council of Governments (COG), and is co-chair of the Westside COG's Sustainability Committee. She is the Westside COG representative for the Southern California Association of Governments' Energy and Environment Committee.
